Susan Summit Cyr began her love affair with the ocean growing up near beaches
and tide pools in Southern California and drawing the treasures that were found there. Born
into a family of artists, she began drawing from nature at a young age and has never stopped.
She parlayed her interest in both biology and art into a degree and a career in Biomedical
Illustration and has created numerous book covers and interior illustrations for publishing
companies, as well as creating artwork for oceanariums, educational institutions, and public gardens.
Her greatest satisfaction, however, comes from creating art that depicts the astonishing
beauty and tremendous variety of the life under the sea. She works primarily in watercolor on paper and
dyes on silk, ever trying to portray the delicate and sometimes dramatic qualities of light and color that
sparkle and shift beneath the surface.
An avid scuba diver, Susan delights in exploring underwater worlds around the globe with
her husband and dive partner, Tom. She enjoys taking underwater photos which she uses later in her studio
for paintings but also has been known to sketch underwater to capture important details of fish or their environment.
It is her deepest wish that her artwork will bring the viewer an enhanced appreciation
for life in the ocean and foster a connection to it because all life, from a tiny nudibranch to
a magnificent whale shark, deserves its place, alive and protected on our fragile earth.
