Included here is a sampling of my recent published pieces. I usually work in watercolor and primarily illustrate natural history subjects. Our home’s menagerie of horses, dog, cat, chickens, cockatiel, fish and various small mammals provide ample opportunity to utilize live models for some of my jobs. Although I love to paint just about anything from the natural world, I take special pleasure in completing complex jobs for which I must research for accuracy. Learning about a new plant, animal or ecosystem becomes as enjoyable as the creation of the artwork. Research for the numerous dinosaur pieces I have done is particularly seductive due to the challenge of interpreting skeletal remains, skin details, and historical renderings of a given animal in an original way. I believe that the most successful biological illustrations combine high scientific accuracy with the essential elements of artistic design along with a dash of personal artistic style. |
