Painting on silk is a joyous experience. The first time my loaded brush touched silk and the dyes flowed into the fabric, I was completely hooked. The way the dyes spread and blend is almost magical and since it seems best to relinquish some control over the process, there are always surprises and new discoveries with each creation. I especially love painting underwater subjects on silk as the wet dyes evoke watery scenes beautifully.

These images are a sampling of some of the pieces that I have created over the years working as a biological illustrator for textbook publishers, public and private institutions and companies. I love the challenge of exceeding the expectations of the client at the same time as creating a satisfying piece of art. I also never tire of painting the flora and fauna of our glorious natural world-whether in its own habitat or a manipulated one.

Seaweed pressings are frameable art made from are actual dried seaweeds and kelps. The plants are floated onto watercolor paper, carefully arranged and slowly dried to preserve every delicate detail and subtle color of these beautiful plants. I collect only detached specimens on the shore and beach that have washed up and are no longer living and each is labeled by name and where collected. This is the bounty of the sea, preserved on paper!

Classes at SeaHorse Studio, whether a one day workshop or months of weekly classes, are relaxed, happy occasions where students are encouraged to expand their creativity, take chances and grow as artists whether they have a depth of artistic experience or none at all. Susan Summit Cyr creates a positive environment where classic artistic principles are emphasized as a base on which to build individual expression.
